Cable Modem: Its market, Technology and Future
Abstract:
Recent market developments signal a renewed interest in
high-speed Internet access through cable infrastructure.
Microsoft's $1B investment in Comcast -- a cable company --
and the Wall Street's "welcoming" of @HOME -- a cable data
network backbone startup -- Initial Public Offering have
sparked optimism in this area of technology.
With standard-based cable modems on the horizon, will this
high-speed Internet access "killer application" be enough
to justify the acceleration and massive upgrade of US cable
plants? The speaker will first trace cable data network
development over the last few years and give an overview of
the market and technology before speculating on what the
likely scenarios and product opportunities will be for the
next few years.
Presenter:
John W. Eng, founder of Bitways Technologies, John W. Eng has
been developing core technologies for next generation
broadband-over-cable systems, with optimization for
Web-enabled telecommunications and the delivery of instant
Internet access, voice and digital video to the home.
Prior to the founding of Bitways, Mr. Eng was a Consultant
Engineer at Digital Equipment Corp., where he held various
positions in engineering, product development and project
management for 19 years.
In the most recent 5 years with Digital, he was with Emerging
Network Technologies Group and focused on Wireless LAN,
Multimedia network and cable network technologies and product
strategies. He helped to develop the first generation of
ChannelWorks cable modems jointly with LANcity Corp. He was
also the principal consultant in the Cable Industry Competency
Center responsible for Cable data network system integration.
Mr. Eng pioneered the area of cable modem standardization.
In 1994, he was instrumental in the formation of IEEE 802.14,
a standard working group developing medium access and physical
layer standards for cable modems. He served as IEEE 802.14
chairman for two years.
He was also a lead engineer in the development of several
high volume products such as VT100/VT240 Video Graphic
Terminals, Networked Personal Computers and low cost
Workstations.
Before joining Digital, Mr. Eng held engineering positions
at Burroughs Corp. and Singer/Tele-signal in product design
and development.
Mr. Eng holds a B.E.E (magna cum laude) and MSEE from New
York University in 1972 and 1973 respectively. He has two
patents granted and one pending. Mr. Eng can be reached at
