A Look at Firewalls and a 7x24 Firewall Management Service

Abstract:

Firewalls have become an indispensible part of today's Internet, Intranet
and Extranet architecture. What are they, how are they used and how are they
managed remain intriging questions to many of us. At this talk, we will
answer these questions by learning about an operational system, the Site
Patrol service.

Site Patrol v3.0 is a managed firewall service that protects the network
perimeter of a GTE Internetworking (formerly BBN Planet) customer site
against unauthorized use of network resources. Customers receive 7x24 hours
support from our Network Operations Center (NOC) for regular calls and
security alerts. In this presentation we will cover the principal components
of the Site Patrol service including the customer premises equipment
(bastion host, choke gateway and emergency intervention hardware), the
support infrastructure (database, configurator, manufacturing hosts and key
distribution center), and the operational aspects (installation,
troubleshooting and customer support).

Presenter:

Luis A. Sanchez received his B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from
the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus, in 1989 and his MS degree
in electrical engineering from Boston University in 1994. Mr. Sanchez
joined Raytheon Corporation in 1990, where he worked on several aspects of
RF engineering, including security for over 2 years. He was also the Lead
Engineer of the Non-Tactical Peripheral Interface project of the PATRIOT
Program. Mr. Sanchez returned to Boston University where he completed his
course work requirements for a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. As part of
his doctoral research work, Mr. Sanchez designed space research
instrumentation. He developed and tested the High Sensitivity
Telescope(HIST), a three element detector designed to measure electrons
from 350 keV to 10 MeV and protons from 2.15 to 80 MeV. He also architected
Boston University's first student-designed satellite, BUSAT. Mr. Sanchez
joined GTE Internetworking (formerly BBN Corporation) in July 1995. He has
worked on several commercial and government security projects. He was also
the Lead Architect of Site Patrol v3.0, BBN's latest version of their
managed firewall service. His current work includes traffic analysis and
protocol development for IP routing and security.
